Trump’s tariffs thwarted?

A major headline this week was the announcement that a US federal court has blocked President Trump’s global trade tariffs, as reported by the BBC and several other news outlets. The Court of International Trade ruled that the president did not have authority to impose these tariffs, with Congress retaining the power to regulate commerce with other countries.

The move was the result of two separate cases – one from the nonpartisan Liberty Justice Centre and the other a coalition of US state governments. Though the Trump administration has said it will appeal the decision, if the ruling is upheld, businesses across the US will no longer be subject to the higher taxes recently introduced on products imported from overseas.

What does this mean for UK businesses? As it stands, any businesses exporting to the US will return to the previous levels of tax. For any who have already been paying the higher rates, a repeat decision by the US high-court will issue a refund of the difference paid.

For others, the news will likely still be welcome. The US stock market saw an almost immediate upturn with the announcement of tariff termination. There are also positive connotations for the UK economy, with the removal of export taxes providing greater freedom and opportunity for international trade. The increased possibility of a global recession forecast by financial experts when the tariffs were initially announced will also once again reduce.

In dentistry, the removal of tariffs is also good news for services – particularly for NHS services, where higher taxes on products might have exacerbated concerns over the affordability of care.

With the story continuing to unfold, we must yet wait and see what all this could mean for the global economy. The result of the appeal will either be an end of the conversation or a highly controversial event in US history.
