The NHS is utilising AI-driven technology to improve prostate cancer diagnostics in men.
Funded by NHS England, the new intuitive is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in the assessment and interpretation of MRI scans for men with suspected prostate cancer. The technology will review scans and highlight any abnormalities to radiologists as priority cases. Biopsies will be booked for the same day, potentially saving men up to a month of waiting for a diagnosis with a previously unprecedented one-day turnaround.
The workflow is being trialled in 15 NHS hospitals and a pilot scheme is due to begin at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in early 2026 to evaluate its real-world feasibility. If successful, the new approach to testing and screening could benefit hundreds of men every year.
Right now, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. An alarming 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed during their lifetime, with more than 12,000 deaths reported each year. Worldwide, the stats are a little better – prostate cancer is the 4th most common of all the cancers.
It is estimated that only half (53%) of cases are diagnosed early in the UK, which falls short of the 75% NHS target. Given that the disease is typically easily curable when detected in its early stages, this emphasises the importance of improved awareness and screening in order to accelerate diagnosis and treatment for better patient outcomes.
The AI-driven programme from the NHS is just one initiative designed to make a difference in this field. Prostate Cancer UK is running the TRANSFORM trial, which launched in May 2024 and is researching the effectiveness of screening methods available. It is the largest prostate cancer screening trial in 20 years.
