Link discovered between gum disease and rheumatiod arthritis

Researchers have discovered a two-way relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis.

As reported by The Dentist, the study examined how microbial imbalances in the mouth contribute to systemic inflammation in reumatoid arthritis patients.

The researchers investigated the interactions between oral bacteria and immune molecules. They correlated the molecular interactions in reumatoid arthritis patients with and without gum disease, individuals with gum disease alone, and healthy people.

The study revealed:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis patients exhibit distinct oral microbiomes, prior to gum disease development. The microbial communities were richer and more diverse than healthy individuals.
  • Cryptobacterium curtum and Prevotella bacteria species were strongly associated with reumatoid arthritis, and correlated with inflammation.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis patients had elevated antibodies against oral pathogens, particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis.
  • Severity of gum disease correlated strongly with reumatoid arthritis activity scores, including joint swelling and pain.

The researchers said the study highlights the importance of integrated care to improve the overall health of patients with inflammation.
