A sexier side of the fairway: Inside Secrets Playa Mujeres

Forget plaid and pro shops – this is what happens when a golf resort gets a glow-up. Secrets Playa Mujeres brings style, calm and contemporary design to the course. Hamish Kilburn writes…

Golf resorts have long been associated with tradition, tranquility – and predictability. But at the newly reopened Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort, Hyatt is making a compelling case for a different narrative altogether. Following an extensive renovation, the adults-only, all-inclusive retreat just north of Cancun emerges as a study in modern coastal design – proving that golf-adjacent doesn’t have to mean buttoned-up.

Set within the private, gated community of Playa Mujeres and framed by a Greg Norman-designed golf course, the 424-suite, AAA Four Diamond resort has been thoughtfully reimagined to reflect a more contemporary, sensorial approach to luxury. The result is a property that feels relaxed yet refined, romantic without excess, and unmistakably grown-up.

“We are thrilled to debut the newly renovated Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort following extensive enhancements to elevate the guest experience,” said Mauricio Martinez, General Manager of Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort. “The resort delivers Secrets Resorts & Spas signature blend of romance, relaxation, and elevated experiences, while also offering guests seeking a more active getaway access to a world-class golf course and a unique mix of leisure and stunning coastal scenery that truly sets it apart.”

At the heart of the renovation is a complete rethinking of the guestroom experience. All suites now feature a contemporary coastal design inspired by the natural rhythms of sea and sky. Soft, neutral colour palettes mirror the horizon, while natural textures and organic forms bring warmth and tactility to the space. Fluid layouts and carefully considered lighting create an atmosphere that feels intimate rather than indulgent – designed for unwinding, lingering, and disconnecting together.

Rather than leaning into overt luxury tropes, the interiors prioritise calm and cohesion. The effect is subtle but impactful: rooms that feel less like hotel accommodations and more like private sanctuaries, where design supports the emotional experience of escape.

Elevated spaces for arrival – and escape

Public spaces throughout the resort have also been refreshed with intention. The arrival experience has been redesigned to feel seamless and welcoming, with the relocation of the Rendezvous lobby bar to the former main lobby and a newly positioned check-in area closer to guestrooms. These changes subtly shift the guest journey, reducing friction while enhancing flow – a hallmark of thoughtful hospitality design.

The newly constructed private beach club delivers a quieter, more contemplative experience. Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, it’s designed as a retreat within a retreat—ideal for unhurried afternoons, sunset cocktails, and moments where the design steps back and lets the view take center stage.

Design that extends after dark

The renovation doesn’t stop at daylight hours. Dining and nightlife venues have been reimagined to reflect a more immersive, atmospheric sensibility. Desires Night Club and Coco Café now feature refreshed interiors with dynamic energy, while Portofino’s updated setting complements its elevated Italian menu.

Later this winter, Bordeaux will debut as an Amazonian-inspired dining experience, adding a layered, transportive design narrative to the resort’s culinary lineup. Meanwhile, enhancements to the Secrets Spa – expected to open mid-February – promise spaces designed for restoration, with aesthetics that support serenity as much as service.

Redefining the modern golf resort

What sets Secrets Playa Mujeres apart isn’t just the scale of its renovation, but the clarity of its vision. This is a resort that understands today’s luxury traveler – one who values design, atmosphere, and emotional resonance as much as amenities. By marrying contemporary interiors with a world-class golf setting, Hyatt has softly redefined what a golf resort can look and feel like.

The takeaway is simple: golf hotels can be sexy when design leads the conversation – who knew? .
