A ‘universal’ vaccine has been developed against various respiratory infections and allergens, including COVID-19.
Researchers from Stanford Medicine have created an intranasal vaccine that offers broad protection from viruses, bacteria, and allergens. Tested in mice, the formula proved effective against SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses, Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii, and even house dust mites.
The new solution is unlike any vaccination currently available, with many relying on antigen specificity or attempting to mimic pathogenic evolution. Instead, it mimics signals between immune cells that typically occur when infection is detected. This creates a feedback loop that facilitates a broad immune reaction, integrating innate immunity as well as adaptive for greater results than has thus far been achieved with traditional vaccines.
In contrast with previous solutions, the new formula is designed to prolong the innate response for weeks or even months, meaning the adaptive immune system is ready to pounce faster than it otherwise would be when pathogens are identified. The result is significantly increased protection against respiratory viruses in the lungs. This is also what gives it a ‘universal’ vaccination status.
Despite this potentially breakthrough research, questions remain regarding the uptake of vaccinations across the UK. A steady decline in childhood vaccines has been recorded in England since 2013-14, with publications showing that no infant programmes met the World Health Organizations’ recommended 95% coverage target in 2023-24. Infrastructural and austerity issues are thought to be affecting access, while public confidence in vaccination programmes has also been reducing since 2015.
Uptake of the annual influenza vaccine was also lower during the 2024-25 season compared to the same period in 2023-24 for all age groups – the only category to buck the trend was pregnant women, with an uplift of almost 3%.
With the possibility of a new universal vaccination on the horizon, it is yet unknown how the general public will react. Further research into the safety of the new formula, how long it lasts in the body, and its long-term benefits for immunity will first need to be answered to incite confidence and encourage uptake it the future.
